FAQ about hitch-hiking in Austria
Written by Bernd Wechner (b.wechner(a)aitec.edu.au)
Well,
I've not hitched Austria much. Had course to
cross teh Alps a few times and had no real
trouble there. But my worst experience ever was
in fact trying to escape Innsbruck in the
direction of Bregenz, the Easter before last. It
took me about five hours to escape the general
area, a lot of asking, a lot of walking and a lot
of waiting. The Tyrolians aren't especially fond
of hitchers (I of Tyrolian origin by the way :-)
but a steady stream of foreign traffic makes it
generally fuine to get around. The problem with
escaping Innsbruck in the westerly direction is
that tehre's no good place around Innsbruck to
take off from. Heading to Mucnich or Italy is
Easy, but Bregenz is tricky, and on top of that I
had a bad day.
The full story is in my book "Memories of a
Hitch-Hitchhiker", Chapter 2, I think
something about Easter in Europe. I'd have to
check though, I'm not sure what's in there, I
don't read my own book every night before tucking
into bed after all. You'll find a link to the
book in the list of links at Suite 101 where the
columns sits, and links to a lot of other stories
and things as well.
