FAQ about hitch-hiking in Poland

Hitch-hiking is quite popular in Poland but most of hikers use it not for tourism purpose but as the cheapest transport. It's generally safe, although You may be told stories about raped girls etc. On the other hand many drivers afraid to take unknown passengers, so don't try to take ride from middle of forest or so. Also night hitchhiking is rather for patient or desperated. I was never requested to pay for lift but often passengers offer some money what may be received or rejected. First letter on plate indicates one of 17 regions of Poland (wojewodztwo) and the second- subregion (powiat). Understanding of foreign languages is not popular but you may try English, German or Russian. If You are looking for cheap bed, look for Youth Hostel (schroniska PTSM).
