FAQ about hitch-hiking in Romania
Written by Gede Matyas (saman(a)sch.bme.hu)
Hitch is
very-very good. The public transportation is
rather poor, so a lot of local people use
hitch-hikeing to go to work etc. The usual car is
"Dacia". On the plates there's a sign
of the county it belongs to.
The only problem is, that sometimes drivers ask
for money. You do better to ask it before you get
in. If you say you have no money, maybe
he'lizingo lift you for free. But if you wait a
little more, you surely will get a free ride.
From the major cities, where the public lighting
is good you can hitch in the late evening, and at
night as well.
In Transylvania, where live a lot of Hungarians
(1.5 millions or more), you can pay with
hungarian Forint almost everywhere.
If you go to Turkey through Bulgaria, the best
thing you can do: at the Giurgiu border station
(Romanian-Bulgarian border) ask the drivers to
bring you to Turkey. (You can't cross the border
on foot). Do not enter to a car goes only to
Bulgaria. It's not good hitch-hiking in Bulgaria.
(I think the only chances are the Turkish
trucks...)
