Hitch-hiking in Lithuania
is absolutely safe, because it is very popular and a lot of young people use it as a kind
of communication means. Most hitch-hikers are not high-skilled in hitch-hiking, like West
European hitch-hikers (drivers too). So it is not usual-thumbing with a table with a city
name. It is because when you hitch-hike with a table, local cars do not stop for you.
It is possible to hitch-hike on
all Lithuanian roads (motorways too). You may have some difficulties on Fridays and
Sundays, when students overcrowd all main roads. They go to their homes and back to studies.
Some drivers in Lithuania and in
other East European countries may ask for money. But it is less and les common every year. On the other hand, some people in the country side are willing to pay for a ride, but not students on the main roads.
Usually you may be asked to pay for a lift by the owner of old car. It is why Lithuanian hitch-hikers do not
try to stop old cars or they ask id the ride is going to be for free.
Only some hitch-hikers from VHHC
hitch-hike at night, so it is not usual for drivers and it is more difficult than for example in Russia.
It is not very fine to
hitch-hike on rainy days, because most of drivers do not like a wet fellow-traveler.
The average speed when hitchhiking in Lithuania is about 55-60 km/h (including waiting time).
Normally waiting time for a
girls is about 10 minutes and for boys - about 15-30 minutes (it depends on the
road).
