HI THERE!
Well.... we just returned from the Latvian/Lithuanian Border where we took 2 of your Members :) (Martinas & his girlfriend)
It was a 130 km long trip with them together (from Sigulda to the Border) and it was an interesting expierience...
We were too fast (and too furious) so police stoped us.We had luck- they let us drive. We had an adrenaline rush in riga, where our driver (BOSIX) forgot to take the turn... etc....
But the craziest thing is...
We speak no Lithuanian...They- no Latvian... Soooo..... we spoke 3 Languages simultaneously: German, English and Russian...
Hope to meet you guys again!

I saw your page, find it amazing. There are several sites in Brazil devoted to low-budget travelling, including hitch-hiking.
The problem in Brazil is mostly the sad economical situation. There are holdups and roberies everywhere, although not so bad as in other countries (depends where, what part of Brazil you're going to). There are safe spots and dangerous spots. And there are roads that the people are used to give rides and those they don't know about it. So i can't say the country is a good or bad bet for a hitch-hiker from other countries. Can't say it's a hit with locals. There are sites proposing it. The only site that i would recommend is http://www2.uol.com.br/oviajante/new2.sh tml
which is not in English (though they think about doing a translation some of these days, there's a small english text at the bottom) If one has a good understanding of spanish and/or portuguese, the site above is a very good starting point. The words for hitch-hiking in portuguese language is "carona" or "viajar de carona", hitcher is "caronista" but one may find good info with "mochileiro", "viajante"

A bit more of recollection :)In June this summer I met a couple of hikers in Poland.A girl from Estonia and a guy from Japan.Accidentally we met 3 times.It was nice to communicate.I hope,u are satisfied with your journey.They were going to Portugal,me-to Prague...Anyway...I want to say,that socializing with people is one of the greatest pleasures while travelling !! And I had a chance to meet hitch-hikers who didn't even stop to talk,untill I didn't call them loudly...You know,it's unbelievable! I can't undrstand,why they travel. See you |
