History

History of VHHC begins even in 1987 when tourists of Vilnius Engineering Construction Institute (now VGTU) founded the Hitch-hiking Section in their Tourists’ Club.

Then they were travelling in all territory of former USSR. All western borders were still closed. After the 1990 (re-establishing of independence in Republic of Lithuania) our hitchhikers starts to go to the west. In 1991 the Hitch-hiking Section’s team takes part in the first International hitchhiking competition in West Europe and after in the second competition “Around The Baltic Sea”. Their main competitor was Leningrad Autostop League (now Saint Petersburg Autostop League – PASL).

At the present moment there are only two members in VHHC who took part in these competitions: Rytis Alekna (ex-president of The Hitch-hiking Section) and Romas Tamosiunas.

The new history of Hitchhiking in Lithuania begins with a foundation of Vilnius Hitchhiking Club in 2 October 1996.
